Scene from “Aarya Dalton Didn’t Sign Up For This”

“Excuse me,” I said, approaching from the left. “Do you have a permit to cut the streetlight like that?”

He glanced at me, his eyes lit with worry for a split-second before he realized who was asking.

“Beat it, kid,” he grumbled. “I’m working.”

“I doubt someone’s paying for this hack job,” I snorted.

He ignored me and unscrewed the bulb. To my surprise, he tossed it to the side and stood. His eyes glowed green and lasers shot from them, slicing the domed top off of the streetlamp. I would have been surprised, but Chris will be able to do the same thing once he actually masters his ability.

“There’s no way that’s legal,” I remarked, my heart racing.

He picked up the bowl and glared at me, his dark eyes flashing green.

“Listen, kid,” he said through gritted teeth (which made his words hard to understand, but I digress). “I’m not in the mood. So beat it.”

“You know, I’m not a fan of being called ‘kid,’” I said angrily. “Especially by some scrawny villain who doesn’t look like he’d be able to grow a proper mustache.”

I saw it in his face before he acted. I’m just gifted at being able to tell when someone is about to punch me. Plus, one of my powers is Heightened Senses so I could feel his punch coming my way.

I swerved, dodging the blow. I raised a hand, forming a ball of light in front of his eyes and blinding him.

“Agh!” the boy cried, grabbing his face.
